How to Use WinPatrol to Monitor Your Windows PC for Changes

WinPatrol is a great utility that you can use to protect your computer if you know how to use it to monitor changes made to your files and folders. Unlike using FCV (FolderChangesView) from Nirsoft Labs which we discussed in an earlier article, WinPatrol is made for beginners and experts alike for in depth PC monitoring.
There are two options to choose from when you download WinPatrol as with most programs online, the free, and the paid version. For the purposes of this article, we will focus on using the free version to monitor changes on your computer.
To begin, you will need to navigate to WinPatrol’s download page to download the installation file. This file will be used to install both the free and paid versions of WinPatrol. Once you have downloaded program to your computer and installed it, simply double click on its icon to launch it. You will notice that the home screen for this program offers 14 different tabs with monitoring functions of which three are only available with the PLUS version.

Startup Programs

From the “Startup Programs” tab, you can monitor the programs that turn on when you start up your machine. To enable or disable any item that is currently in the list, simply click on the entry then click the enable or disable button. The orange arrow shows a box that, when ticked, will make WinPatrol to check for any changes to the startup programs.
By clicking on the pink arrow, on the small clock icon, you will be able to change how often WinPatrol checks for these changes. I recommend that you leave it at two minutes, which is the default.
When a startup entry is removed manually or because of an uninstallation, it will be detected by WinPatrol and you will see a notification like the one below.
If a new entry is added, such as when you install a program, you will be asked whether or not this task has permission to start with windows. You can either accept or reject the change from this window. You can also open the folder where the executable file is located or view the file’s properties. If you did not install a program or recognize the change, it is safest to reject the change. Since this is just a startup notification, it will not uninstall the program; just prevent it from automatically turning on.

Scheduled Tasks 1.0

This tab is where you can see any tasks that are scheduled to run on your computer. If you select an item and press the “info” button, you will also see any information related to the program’s schedule. To change how frequently WinPatrol checks for changes to this section, just press the stopwatch and change the timer.

Services

The services tab will show you a list of all the services on your computer that are running and stopped. You will also see details about the startup settings, executable name, and the company that it comes from. To change how frequently WinPatrol checks for changes to this section, just press the stopwatch and change the timer.

Cookies

On the cookies tab you can search for, and remove, cookies with specific text in their titles. This helps you to filter out cookies that you don’t want to keep on your computer. You can also select which browser you want to search and whether you want to remove them. For example, if you type the word “facebook” in the “Add” section, you can prevent the selected browser (Mozilla Firefox) from storing them.

Recent

If you happen to know that you had a recent malware infection and you need to ensure that all residual traces of the program have been removed, you can use the “Recent” tab. This will show you a list of all programs and processes that were recently active. You can select any item in the list and kill the task. Before or after killing the task, you can right click on the item and select “Delete on Reboot” to delete all traces of the program the next time you start your computer.

Options

The options tab will present you with several report functions which you will see on the right side of the screen. On the left, you can click on the two stopwatches to edit the time it takes before the corresponding actions take place.
If you click on the “Repair and rest tools,” you will be taken to a new popup screen with several other tasks to choose from. These are user tools to undo changes, cleanup specific areas of the program, and delete any files that have been deleted with WinPatrol.

Wrapping Up

As I mentioned earlier, WinPatrol’s main function is to monitor your system for any changes. This is highly useful when you are installing new programs and when you are browsing sites with bad reputations as malware hosts. Whenever it detects a change in your system, it will bark and present a popup screen that asks you whether or not you intended to make any changes and will ask for permission to carry out the operation.

How To Create Your Own Run Commands In Windows

Most of the PC users are habitual of using windows OS. Have you ever wondered why?? There is no special reason behind it. The very basic reason behind it is its simplicity and very easy to use. Another reason is it comes with many amazing features.
crete-your-own1
Then what is this run command we are talking about? It is nothing separate  but just another feature of Windows OS, that allows you to open any program or application by simply typing a single command, that is also helpful in saving lot of our time. Therefore, it becomes a very essential tool especially when it is about finishing  your work on time.
Many PC users feel that these specific commands are already programmed in Windows OS and they can not be moulded which is a complete false. This is the reason why I have written this blog which shall be talking all about creating your own run commands in windows enabling you to open your desired program and that too in a lesser time being consumed. There is no dearth of Run commands provided by windows but these are very difficult to remember . Hence, in such case its very important to know how to create your own rum command.  Below are given the steps..!! Go through them !

FOLLOW THE STEPS
The very first instruction says that you will have to select a program or an application for which you wish to create your own Run command.
After this step, next step asks you to right- click on the desktop and creating a new shortcut.
Now, a new dialogue box will make its appearance before you in which you are required to enter the path of your desired program or application for which you are taking all this effort of making a Run command.
Once you find the path of your specific program or application, then the next step is to click NEXT and enter the name to your short cut. Okay, there is one thing that you need to keep in your mind which is that the name you are providing in the shortcut is the same name that will be used as a Run command. For instance, if you name the short cut as BoD, then you will have to enter the same name or same words in the Run command in order to make the application work. The final step is- clicking the Finish button.
Having followed all these steps sincerely, copy that newly created shortcut and paste it in Windows main directory that is very often C:\Windows.

So, this is it. Your task has been completed. Here is your new run command which is all set to be used by you to start your desired application or program, simply by typing the name of your created shortcut in the Run command and the best part is no more time wastage. You can save your precious time at least on this.
We hope this compilation of all the steps help you with your new run commands and its efficient and smooth functioning.

How Cloud Computing Works

Let's say you're an executive at a large corporation. Your particular responsibilities include making sure that all of your employees have the right hardware and software they need to do their jobs. Buying computers for everyone isn't enough -- you also have to purchase software or software licenses to give employees the tools they require. Whenever you have a new hire, you have to buy more software or make sure your current software license allows another user. It's so stressful that you find it difficult to go to sleep on your huge pile of money every night.
Soon, there may be an alternative for executives like you. Instead of installing a suite of software for each computer, you'd only have to load one application. That application would allow workers to log into a Web-based service which hosts all the programs the user would need for his or her job. Remote machines owned by another company would run everything from e-mail to word processing to complex data analysis programs. It's called cloud computing, and it could change the entire computer industry.
In a cloud computing system, there's a significant workload shift. Local computers no longer have to do all the heavy lifting when it comes to running applications. The network of computers that make up the cloud handles them instead. Hardware and software demands on the user's side decrease. The only thing the user's computer needs to be able to run is the cloud computing system's interface software, which can be as simple as a Web browser, and the cloud's network takes care of the rest.
There's a good chance you've already used some form of cloud computing. If you have an e-mail account with a Web-based e-mail service like Hotmail, Yahoo! Mail or Gmail, then you've had some experience with cloud computing. Instead of running an e-mail program on your computer, you log in to a Web e-mail account remotely. The software and storage for your account doesn't exist on your computer -- it's on the service's computer cloud.

How PCI Works

The power and speed of computer components has increased at a steady rate since desktop computers were first developed decades ago. Software makers create new applications capable of utilizing the latest advances in processor speed and hard drive capacity, while hardware makers rush to improve components and design new technologies to keep up with the demands of high-end software. There's one element, however, that often escapes notice - the bus. Essentially, a bus is a channel or path between the components in a computer. Having a high-speed bus is as important as having a good transmission in a car. If you have a 700-horsepower engine combined with a cheap transmission, you can't get all that power to the road. There are many different types of buses. The idea of a bus is simple -- it lets you connect components to the computer's processor. Some of the components that you might want to connect include hard disks, memory, sound systems, video systems and so on. For example, to see what your computer is doing, you normally use a CRT or LCD screen. You need special hardware to drive the screen, so the screen is driven by a graphics card. A graphics card is a small printed circuit board designed to plug into the bus. The graphics card talks to the processor using the computer's bus as a communication path. The advantage of a bus is that it makes parts more interchangeable. If you want to get a better graphics card, you simply unplug the old card from the bus and plug in a new one. If you want two monitors on your computer, you plug two graphics cards into the bus. And so on. In this article, you will learn about some of those buses. We will concentrate on the bus known as the Peripheral Component Interconnect (PCI). We'll talk about what PCI is, how it operates and how it is used, and we'll look into the future of bus technology.

PCI History

The original PC bus in the original IBM PC (circa 1982) was 16 bits wide and operated at 4.77 MHz. It officially became known as the ISA bus. This bus design is capable of passing along data at a rate of up to 9 MBps (megabytes per second) or so, fast enough even for many of today's applications.
Several years ago, the ISA bus was still used on many computers. That bus accepted computer cards developed for the original IBM PC in the early 1980s. The ISA bus remained in use even after more advanced technologies were available to replace it.
There were a couple of key reasons for its longevity:
  • Long-term compatibility with a large number of hardware manufacturers.
  • Before the rise of multimedia, few hardware peripherals fully utilized the speed of the newer bus.
As technology advanced and the ISA bus failed to keep up, other buses were developed. Key among these were Extended Industry Standard Architecture (EISA) -- which was 32 bits at 8 MHz-- and Vesa Local Bus (VL-Bus). The cool thing about VL-Bus (named after VESA, the Video Electronics Standards Association, which created the standard) is that it was 32 bits wide and operated at the speed of the local bus, which was normally the speed of the processor itself. The VL-Bus essentially tied directly into the CPU. This worked okay for a single device, or maybe even two. But connecting more than two devices to the VL-Bus introduced the possibility of interference with the performance of the CPU. Because of this, the VL-Bus was typically used only for connecting a graphics card, a component that really benefits from high-speed access to the CPU.
During the early 1990s, Intel introduced a new bus standard for consideration, the Peripheral Component Interconnect (PCI) bus. PCI presents a hybrid of sorts between ISA and VL-Bus. It provides direct access to system memory for connected devices, but uses a bridge to connect to the frontside bus and therefore to the CPU. Basically, this means that it is capable of even higher performance than VL-Bus while eliminating the potential for interference with the CPU.
